Plantation (Kitchener's) Island

Plantation Island was known in the past as Kitchener's Island. It had been given to Lord Kitchener in recognition of his campaign in the Sudan (1896-98). Kitchener and the Ministry of Irrigation turned the isle into a botantical garden with plants from all regions of the then British Empire. Today Plantation Island is owned by the Egyptian Government. In addition to its splendid gardens it houses a biological research station. The island is popular with locals and tourists alike. Explore the botanical gardens or sit under a palm tree and watch the feluccas sail by on the Nile.
